Joseph A. McArdle
Joseph A. McArdle (born June 29, 1903 in Muncie , Indiana , † December 27, 1967 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1942 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1905, Joseph McArdle moved with his parents to Pittsburgh, where he attended public schools. Then he worked in the insurance business. Politically, he initially joined the Democratic Party . Between 1936 and 1938 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania . In the congressional elections of 1938 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 33rd constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Henry Ellenbogen, who had since resigned, on January 3, 1939 .
After a re-election, McArdle could remain in Congress until his resignation on January 5, 1942 . The Roosevelt government's last New Deal laws were passed there by 1941 . Since December 7, 1941, the day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor , the work of Congress has been shaped by the events of World War II . McArdle was on the Pittsburgh City Council between 1942 and 1949. During this time he switched to the Republicans and was a member of their State Board for Pennsylvania between 1950 and 1966. He died on December 27, 1967 in Pittsburgh, where he was also buried.
