Joseph Matthew Gaydos (born July 3, 1926 in Braddock , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania - † February 7, 2015 ) was an American politician . Between 1968 and 1993 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Gaydos served in the United States Navy Reserve from 1944 to 1946 during the final stages of World War II, serving in the Pacific. He then studied at Duquesne University until 1947 . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and his admission to the bar in 1952, he began to work in this profession in Pittsburgh . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate in 1967 and 1968 . Prior to his time as a congressman, he also served intermittently as his state's Assistant Attorney General and Assistant Attorney General in Allegheny County. He also served as legal advisor to the United Mine Workers of America's fifth district .

After the death of MP Elmer J. Holland , Gaydos was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the 20th seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on November 5, 1968. After eleven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1993 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell . In 1992 he gave up another candidacy. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Joseph Gaydos no longer appeared politically.
