Vera Buchanan

Vera Daerr Buchanan (born July 20, 1902 in Wilson , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania , †  November 26, 1955 in McKeesport , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1951 and 1955 she represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Vera Buchanan was the wife of Congressman Frank Buchanan (1902–1951). While still a child, she moved to Duquesne , where she attended public schools. Nothing is known about her professional career beyond politics.

After the death of her husband, who passed away as a congressman, she was elected as the Democratic Party candidate in the by-election for the 33rd seat of Pennsylvania as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she was elected on July 24, 1951 took up her new mandate. After two re-elections in the 30th district of her state, Vera Buchanan could remain in Congress until her death on November 26, 1955 . Her time in Congress included the Korean War and, domestically, the beginning of the civil rights movement .
