John G. Sawyer
John Gilbert Sawyer (born June 5, 1825 in Brandon , Rutland County , Vermont , † September 5, 1898 in Albion , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1891 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Sawyer attended his home public schools and Millville Academy in New York State. Between 1848 and 1851 he was a school councilor in charge of public schools in Orleans County . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1850, he began to work in this profession in Albion. From 1851 to 1862 he was also justice of the peace in the parish of Barre . From 1862 to 1865 he served as a district attorney there; from 1867 to 1883 he was also in Orleans County District Judge and District Councilor. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . He took part as a delegate at several regional party conventions in his state.
In the congressional elections of 1884 Sawyer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 31st constituency of New York , where he succeeded Democrat Robert S. Stevens on March 4, 1885 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1891 . From 1889 he was chairman of the Committee for the Control of Expenditures of the Navy Ministry.
In 1890, John Sawyer waived another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on September 5, 1898 in Albion, where he was also buried.
