Geographical location

Guilford is located in the southeast of Windham County, on the border with Massachusetts , between the foothills of the northwestern edge of the Appalachians and the southern edge of the Green Mountains , on the west bank of the Connecticut River . Several smaller streams flow through the area of ​​the town, leaving the town to the northeast and south. They all flow into the Connecticut River. There are two smaller lakes in Guilford with the Sweet Pond and the Weatherhead Hollow Pond . The highest point is Gouvenor's Mountain with a height of 497 m. The main settlement is traversed by the Green River , which is also crossed by a covered bridge .

history

Guilford was proclaimed in 1754 by Benning Wentworth and again in 1758. It was one of the areas over which the colonies of Massachusetts and New York fought; thus the first proclamation was made by Massachusetts, the second by New York. The first settlers did not reach the area until 1761. The tensions between "Yorkists" and "Vermontists" - the settler groups from the two states mentioned - led to such strong unrest that in 1783 Ethan Allen was sent by the Vermont administration to fight the conflict of soldiers to finish. This incident came to be known as the "Guilford War". The tensions did not end until 1791 with the proclamation of Vermont as a separate state and the accession to the Union of the United States.

In 1957, Guilford hit the headlines when the Franklin Barbecue took place. When an 80 kg calf was born there in 1953, the plan arose to have a barbecue when the Franklin family's sons had returned from the war. In 1957 the barbecue was held with more than 1400 visitors, which attracted media attention worldwide.

Even today, many residents earn their living primarily from agriculture. In addition, Guilford serves as a dormitory city for commuters to the northern neighboring town of Brattleboro . The attempt made since the mid-1980s to build a winter sports industry in Guilford has so far been unsuccessful.

Religions

The social needs of the place are served by two churches (a Catholic religious church and a branch of the United Church of Christ ) as well as by a historical society. In addition, a Central School leads up to 8th grade. Medical care for the citizens is ensured by a hospital in nearby Brattleboro.

The Interstate 91 into a north-south direction along the eastern border of the Town. US Highway 5 follows its course from Brattleboro in the north to Bernadston in the south. The nearest Amtrak station is in Brattleboro.

Guilford is part of the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union . Guilford Central School is located in Guilford . It offers school education from kindergarten to the end of the sixth grade.

Guilford Free Library

The Guilford Free Library is located on Guilford Center Road in Guilford. It is one of the oldest continuously operating public libraries in Vermont. It was founded in 1890 and goes back to the estate of Cynthia King. The Guilford Parish used its inheritance to buy books. In 1891 a building for the library was built in the country by William Barney. The cost of the building was $ 300. It was opened on July 2, 1892. Even before it was founded, there is said to have been a small private library from 1790 to 1815.
