Raphe Malik (actually Laurence Mazel , * 1. November 1948 in Cambridge (Massachusetts) , † 8. March 2006 in Guilford (Vermont) ) was an American free jazz - trumpet .

Live and act

Malik grew up in the Boston area ; in his teens he played rhythm and blues in Boston clubs . He studied at the University of Massachusetts from 1966 to 1970 ; then he went to Paris , where he played with saxophonist Frank Wright and members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago . After returning to the USA, he studied at Antioch College in Ohio , where he met Cecil Taylor , Jimmy Lyons and Andrew Cyrille . Since the 1970s, Malik then worked with Cecil Taylor in his formations; In 1974 he performed with Taylor's Big Band at New York's Carnegie Hall . Malik took part in numerous recordings in the 1970s, such as the Enja album Dark to Themselves (1976) and the album Cecil Taylor Unit (1978), which was recorded as a quintet , and toured Europe with him several times .

In the 1980s he only worked sporadically with Taylor. In 1983 he worked on Jimmy Lyons album Wee Sneezawee on the Black Saint label; in the 1980s he also directed his own quintet in the Boston area. In 1992 he married Marguerite Serkin; the couple moved to Vermont , where he taught at Bennington College.

In the 1990s Malik continued to work with his own formations and recorded albums a. a. for the labels Free Music Production , Mapleshade and Eremite, where he worked with Rashid Bakr Glenn Spearman , Sabir Mateen , Dennis Charles and William Parker . He also played in the band of Boston drummer Dennis Warren , the Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble and took part in the recordings of Glenn Spearman ( Free Worlds , 1995), Paul Flaherty and the John Coltrane project of the Rova Saxophone Quartet ( John Coltrane's Ascension ). In 2001 he played in Alan Silva's Sound Visions Orchestra . One of his last recordings before his death in 2006 was the trio album Sympathy (2002) with Joe McPhee and Donald Robinson .

The critic Chris Kelsey counts Malik among the few trumpeters who performed Cecil Taylor's highly energetic trumpet play.
