Geographical location

Whitingham is in southwest Windham County, with the foothills of the Green Mountains and the Deerfield River to the west. The Hariman Reservoir in the northwest is surrounded by the town, but does not belong to the area of ​​the town. The largest body of water is Sadawga Lake in the center, there are also other smaller lakes and rivers. The State Route 100 leads from the west at Hariman reservoir passing to the north. The highest point is the 674 m high, centrally located Streeter Hill .

Whitingham was founded on March 12, 1770. Nathan Whiting , who in 1767 had written a petition regarding the settlement of the area to the acting governor of the province of New York , Cadwallader Colden , received a grant for the area with twelve other people.

Floating islands on Sadawga Lake

Whitingham consists of the Villages Whitingham and Jacksonville . The town is located on Sadawga Lake. Initially Whitingham was known as Sadawga Springs , later it was renamed Whitingham after Nathan Whiting. Jacksonville was originally known as Point Pleasant and was renamed Jacksonville in 1834 in honor of President Andrew Jackson .

Brigham Young , a Mormon leader and founder of Salt Lake City , was born in Whitingham in 1801 .

In 1923 the Harriman Reservoir dam was built, named after the engineer Henry I. Harriman who constructed the dam. The Harriman Reservoir is also called Lake Whitingham . The town's first building was in the area that was later flooded by the waters of Lake Whitingham.

The Town Hill is located between Jacksonville and Whitingham. It was the site of the largest early settlement, with churches, shops, the post office and schools. The first church on Town Hill was founded in 1799. It was used by all denominations.

The Brattleboro Memorial Hospital in Brattleboro is the hospital for the region. It was founded in 1904.

education

Whitingham and Wilmington make up the Twin Valley School District . It belongs to the Windham South West Supervisory Union . The Twin Valley Elementary School is located in Wilmington; she has classes from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. Students in Grades 6 through 12 attend Twin Valley Middle High School , located in Whitingham.

One public library, the Whitingham Free Public Library, is located in Jacksonville.
