Geographical location

Windham is in the northwest of Windham County, with the foothills of the Green Mountains to the west. Londonderry borders with the Magic Mountain Ski Area to the west. A few small rivers flow through the town and leave it in a north or south direction. The South Branch Williams River is dammed into a few small lakes in the north and the Burbee Pond is the largest body of water on Turkey Mountain Brook in the south . The State Route 121 runs from west to east. The highest point is the 635 m high, in the north located Timber Ridge Mountain .

Windham was first founded in 1770 under the name "Kent" by the Province of New York on behalf of James Rogers . The town of Kent also included the area of ​​today's town of Londonderry. The Vermont Republic legislature reassigned the area and Londonderry was established on April 20, 1780. Londonderry was named after Londonderry (New Hampshire) . In 1795 Windham was separated from Londonderry and founded as an independent town. Benning Wentworth named the new town after his friend Charles Wyndham, 2nd Earl of Egremont .

At the beginning of the 19th century, Windham experienced a heyday with 931 inhabitants in 1820. The town lived from trade, there were sawmills, forges, farms, flour mills, talc and marble were quarried. A meeting house was built in 1802 and completed in 1825. There were several schools and parishes.

Almost 69% of the residents of Windham do not belong to any religious community, around 20% are Catholic and around 10% are Protestants.

Public facilities

The Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend is the hospital for the region. It was founded in 1949.

education

The Windham Elementary School offers classes from kindergarten to sixth grade. Teaching takes place in two classes, from kindergarten to class 2 and from class 3 to 6. The school is currently attended by 16 students. Windham is part of the Windham South West Supervisory Union .

A public library, the Windham Town Library , is located on Windham Hill Road.
