Anthony C. Higgins
Anthony C. Higgins (* 1. October 1840 in Red Lion Hundred, New Castle , Delaware ; † 26. June 1912 in New York City ) was an American politician of the Republican Party , of the State of Delaware in the US Senate represented.
After attending a private school and Delaware College , Higgins, whose grandfather John Clark was Governor of Delaware from 1817 to 1820 , moved to Yale College , where he graduated in 1861. A degree in law , he graduated from the Law School in Harvard , before he was admitted to the bar in 1864 and in Wilmington began practicing. In the same year he also served briefly in the US Army during the Civil War .
Also in 1864, Higgins was appointed Deputy Attorney General of Delaware; from 1869 to 1876 he was a state attorney for Delaware. In 1884 he failed in an attempt to be elected to the US House of Representatives ; four years later, however, he received a mandate in Congress . From 1889 to 1895 he was a member of the US Senate, after he had prevailed against the incumbent Eli M. Saulsbury ; however, he missed re-election. During his tenure in the Senate, he chaired the Public Service Committee.
After retiring from politics, Higgins returned to working as a lawyer in Wilmington. He was one of the defense lawyers in the ultimately successful impeachment proceedings against Federal District Judge Charles Swayne .
