Nicholas Van Dyke Jr. (* 20th December 1770 in New Castle , Delaware Colony ; † 21st May 1826 ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Federalist Party ), a member of the House of Representatives of the United States and US senator was .

Life

Nicholas Van Dyke was born in New Castle on December 20, 1770 to Nicholas Van Dyke Sr. and Charlotte Stanley Van Dyke. His father was also an important politician and a member of the Continental Congress . Following the example of his father, he completed his law studies at the College of New Jersey (today: Princeton University ) in 1788 and was admitted to the bar in 1792. In 1796 he married Mary Ann Leuvaneigh, with whom he had six children.

Political career

Van Dyke was the first time a member of the House of Representatives for Delaware in the 10th  United States Congress . Although the legislature had already started on March 4, 1807, Nicholas Van Dyke was not a member of Congress until October 6, as he succeeded the resigned James M. Broom . He was also a member of the subsequent Congress (March 4, 1809– March 3, 1811). Since the federalists were only a weak minority, he was subsequently Attorney General of the State of Delaware. He then held the office of State Senator from Delaware and during this term he was elected to the United States Senate, where he was active from March 4, 1817 until his death on May 21, 1826.
