Thomas Cooper (politician)

Thomas Cooper (born 1764 in Little Creek Hundred , Sussex County , Delaware Colony , † July 1, 1829 in Georgetown , Delaware ) was an American politician . Between 1813 and 1817 he represented the state of Delaware in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Cooper was the older brother of William B. Cooper , who was Governor of Delaware between 1841 and 1845 . The exact date of birth of Thomas Cooper is unknown. He attended elementary school in his homeland and became a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1803 and 1808 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware . In the meantime he studied law. Since his admission to the bar in 1805, he has practiced this profession alongside his political activities for the rest of his life in Georgetown. Between 1808 and 1811, Thomas Cooper was a member of the Delaware Senate .

For the congressional elections of 1812, Delaware was granted a second seat in the US House of Representatives for the first time. The state was only able to keep this seat for ten years until 1823. The elections took place throughout the state of Delaware ("at large"). Thomas Cooper was elected to Congress . After re-election in 1814, he was able to exercise his mandate between March 4, 1813 and March 3, 1817. After his tenure in Congress, Cooper retired from politics and worked as a lawyer in Georgetown, where he died in 1829. He was buried in the Coopers family grave near Laurel .
