Lisa Blunt Rochester (born February 10, 1962 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . She has represented the state of Delaware in the US House of Representatives since January 3, 2017 .

Career

In 1969 Lisa Blunt, her maiden name, moved with her parents to Wilmington , Delaware. At Fairleigh Dickinson University , she studied International Relations and at the University of Delaware, local politics and public policy . In the meantime she lived for a short time in Shanghai in the People's Republic of China .

Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . In the past, she has held various positions in the state government of Delaware. So she was initially Deputy Minister for Health and Social Affairs. She then became Minister of Labor and later the State Personnel Director of the state government. She was also the executive director of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League .

In the 2016 congressional elections , Lisa Blunt Rochester was elected as her party's candidate in the only constituency of Delaware, which is thus identical to the entire state, against Republican Hans Reigle in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she was elected on April 3. January 2017 succeeded John C. Carney , who was also elected Governor of Delaware in November 2016 . She is the first woman and person of African American descent to serve in the US House of Representatives for the state of Delaware.

She was married to Charles Blunt, who died in 2014, and has two children.
