William G. Whiteley

William G. Whiteley (1859)

William Gustavus Whiteley (born August 7, 1819 in Newark , Delaware , †  April 23, 1886 in Wilmington , Delaware) was an American politician .

Whiteley attended Princeton College and studied law . After graduating from Princeton in 1838, he was admitted to the bar in 1841 and practiced in Wilmington.

Whiteley was elected to Congress in 1856 as a Democrat and represented the state of Delaware in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1857 to March 3, 1861. In 1860, he was not available for a new candidacy.

Whiteley was Mayor of Wilmington from 1875 to 1878. During this time he was also a member of the commission that dealt with fisheries disputes between New Jersey and Delaware in 1877 . Whiteley was a judge in the Superior Court of Delaware from March 31, 1884 until his death . He was buried in Bridgeton Cemetery in Bridgeton , New Jersey.
