Thomas W. Miller

Thomas Woodnutt Miller (born June 26, 1886 in Wilmington , Delaware , †  May 5, 1973 in Reno , Nevada ) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1917 he represented the state of Delaware in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Miller was the son of Charles R. Miller , who served as governor of Delaware between 1913 and 1917 . Thomas attended the Hotchkiss School and then Yale University until 1908 . He had been interested in mining in Nevada since his youth. In 1908 he was employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company , a steel company. He worked there until 1909. Between 1910 and 1912 he was secretary to Congressman William H. Heald . Miller used the time of his stay in Washington, DC to study law. He was then made Secretary of State by his father, who was then governor of Delaware . He held this office between 1913 and 1915.

In the 1914 congressional elections , Miller was elected as the Republican Party candidate to the US House of Representatives. There he replaced the Democrat Franklin Brockson on March 4, 1915 . But since he was defeated by Albert F. Polk in the 1916 elections, he was only able to complete one legislative term in Congress until March 3, 1917 .

During the First World War , Thomas Miller rose in the US Army from simple soldier to lieutenant colonel. He was used in the French theater of war and decorated with many awards. In 1919 he was a co-founder of the American Legion . Between 1921 and 1925 he was a trustee for foreign property ( Alien Property Custodian ). At that time he was also a member of the commission that dealt with American war memorials. Miller is also considered to be the founder of Nevada's state parks. Between 1935 and 1973 he was several times chairman of the national park committee of this state. From 1945 to 1957 he also worked for the Federal Agency for Placement of Jobs for War Veterans ( Veterans Employment Service ).

Thomas Miller died in Reno on May 5, 1973. He was the uncle of Clement Woodnutt Miller , who sat for the State of California in the US House of Representatives from 1959 to 1962 .
