Nathaniel B. Smithers

Nathaniel Barratt Smithers (born October 8, 1818 in Dover , Delaware , † January 16, 1896 ibid) was an American politician .

Smithers graduated from Lafayette College , Pennsylvania in 1836 . He then studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1840 and then opened a law practice in Dover. He later held the post of Secretary of State of Delaware from January 20 to November 23, 1863 . He was also elected as a unionist in the 38th US Congress to fill the vacancy in the House of Representatives that had been created by the death of William Temple . There he served from December 7, 1863 to March 3, 1865. In 1864, he ran unsuccessfully for re-election to the 39th Congress . He then returned to his practice in Dover. In the same year he attended the Republican National Convention as a delegate .

Smithers died in Dover in 1896 and was buried there in the Old Methodist Cemetery .
