James R. Lofland

James Rush Lofland (born November 2, 1823 in Milford , Delaware , †  February 10, 1894 there ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Delaware in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Lofland enjoyed a classical education and then studied until 1845 at Delaware College in Newark , from which today's University of Delaware emerged . After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1848, Lofland began practicing his new profession in his hometown of Milford. In 1849 he was employed in the administration of the Delaware Senate . In 1853 he was a member of an assembly to revise the state constitution. From 1855 to 1859 he was the Secretary of State in his home state. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . From 1863 he was paymaster of the US Army during the Civil War and then until 1867 .

In June 1872, Lofland was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia , where President Ulysses S. Grant was nominated for a second term. In the congressional election of the same year, Lofland was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC with 51% of the vote against the Democrat Eustis Wright . There he replaced Benjamin T. Biggs on March 4, 1873 . Since he lost to James Williams in the following elections , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1875 .

After the end of his time in Congress, Lofland withdrew from politics. He worked as a lawyer again in the following years. James Lofland died in February 1894 and was buried in Milford Cemetery.
