John A. Nicholson

John Anthony Nicholson (born November 17, 1827 in Laurel , Delaware , † November 4, 1906 in Dover , Delaware) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he represented the state of Delaware in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Nicholson attended the common schools and then graduated to 1847 the Dickinson College in Carlisle ( Pennsylvania ). Then he went to school himself. In 1851 he was a school councilor for Kent County's public schools . He also studied law. After his admission to the bar, he began working in this profession in Dover. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he became Brigadier General of the Kent County Militia.

Nicholson was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1864 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he replaced Republican Nathaniel B. Smithers on March 4, 1865 . After re-election in 1866, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1869 . During the first legislative period from 1865 to 1867 he was a member of the electoral committee; in the second term he was a member of the budget committee. The failed attempt to impeach President Andrew Johnson also fell during this period .

In 1868, John Nicholson renounced another candidacy for Congress. He started working as a lawyer again and retired from politics. Nicholson died in Dover in 1906 and was buried there. Since 1844 he was married to Angelica Killeen Reed. His son John held a legal administrative position in the state government of Delaware from 1895 to 1909 as Chancellor .
