John M. Vining

John Middleton Vining (born December 23, 1758 in Dover , Delaware Colony , † February 1802 in Wilmington , Delaware ) was an American politician of the Federalist Party . From 1789 to 1798 he sat for the US state of Delaware in the US House of Representatives and in the US Senate .

Early life and family

Vining was born in Dover to John Vining and Phoebe Wynkoop. His father was a prominent lawyer and landowner who later became Chief Justice in Delaware. His father died when Vining was eleven years old. In 1790 Vining married Anna Maria Seaton. They had four sons together. 1800, after the last birth, his wife died of childbirth.

Political career

Vining studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1782. He settled in Dover and quickly became one of the most prominent lawyers in the city. Because of his prominence and popularity, Vining was elected to the Continental Congress for Delaware in 1784 . This marked the beginning of his political career. Until 1786 he sat in the Continental Congress. Between 1787 and 1789 he was a member of the Delaware House of Representatives .

In 1788, Vining successfully ran for a seat in the US House of Representatives. He was re-elected once. In 1793 he served on the Delaware Senate for a year . In 1793 he moved within Congress to the Senate, to which he belonged until his resignation in 1798. After resigning, he withdrew from public life entirely.

Vining died in Wilmington in February 1802. He was buried in the Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery in his native city.
