Harry Alden Richardson (born January 1, 1853 in Camden , Delaware , † June 16, 1928 in Dover , Delaware) was an American politician of the Republican Party .

When Harry Alden Richardson was a young boy, his family moved from Camden, his birthplace, to Dover in 1863. He attended public school there, and later a private school in East Greenwich ( Rhode Island ). In 1876 he married Priscilla Walker.

Richardson first worked in his father's can and packaging company, in which he later became a partner, before taking it over completely himself in 1894. He remained loyal to this trade for the rest of his life, but later also served as President of the First National Bank of Dover and worked in a few other areas of business.

His first attempt to be elected to public office failed when he lost the election to governor of Delaware to Democrat Robert J. Reynolds with 49:51 percent of the vote in 1890 . It was not until a few years later that Richardson faced another election, which he won this time: in 1907 he won a seat in the United States Senate . Republicans made up the majority faction in Congress throughout his six-year term . He was chairman of the Civil Service Committee and the Pacific Islands and Puerto Rico Committee. In 1912 he did not apply for re-election, so he resigned from the Senate on March 4, 1913.
