James M. Tunnell

James Miller Tunnell (born August 2, 1879 in Clarksville , Sussex County , Delaware , †  November 14, 1957 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Delaware in the US Senate .

James Tunnell was born in the small town of Clarksville near Millville . He attended public schools in his home country and then Franklin College in Ohio , where he graduated in 1900. He subsequently worked as a teacher and became head of the schools in Frankford , Selbyville and Ocean View . During this time he also studied law , after which he was admitted to the bar in 1907 and began practicing law in Georgetown .

From 1919 to 1932 Tunnell was the Education Committee of the city of Georgetown. He also worked in banking and ran a number of farms in Sussex County. In 1924 he ran for a seat in the US Senate for the first time, but he only got 41 percent of the vote and was clearly defeated by the Republican T. Coleman du Pont .

In 1940 Tunnell ran again for the Senate election, where he met the Republican incumbent John G. Townsend . He prevailed with 51 percent of the vote, whereupon he took up his mandate in Congress from January 3, 1941. As a member of the democratic majority parliamentary group, he then headed the pension committee, among other things. In 1946 he ran for re-election, but this time he did not get more than 45 percent of the vote and consequently lost to Republican John J. Williams , who replaced him on January 3, 1947 as Senator.

Tunnell then withdrew from politics and died in Philadelphia in 1957.
