Eli May Saulsbury

Eli May Saulsbury (* 29. December 1817 in Mispillion Hundred, Kent County , Delaware ; †  22. March 1893 in Dover , Delaware) was an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Eli Saulsbury was the younger brother of Gove Saulsbury , who later became governor of Delaware; his brother Willard , born in 1820, represented the state in the US Senate, as did his son of the same name .

After schooling is Saulsbury wrote on Dickinson College in Carlisle ( Pennsylvania on). He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1857, after which he began to practice in his home, Dover.

Saulsbury was politically active from 1853, when he became a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware for two years . In 1870 he then competed for a seat in the Senate against his younger brother Willard, who was incumbent at the time, and prevailed. He was confirmed twice, but failed on the fourth attempt at Republican Anthony C. Higgins , so that his term ended on March 3, 1889. During his tenure in the Senate, he was a member of the Committee on Privileges and Elections and the Committee on Engrossed Bills . He subsequently worked as a lawyer again and died four years later in Dover, where he was also buried.
