Joseph P. Comegys

Joseph Parsons Comegys (born December 23, 1813 in Dover , Delaware , † February 1, 1893 ibid) was an American politician ( Whig Party ) and lawyer .

Life

Joseph Comegys was the son of Cornelius P. Comegys , who later became governor of Delaware. He was born on the Cherbourg family home in Dover, Kent County .

After attending private school in Dover, he studied at the later Secretary of State US John M. Clayton , which he as a Senator should succeed, Jura and was admitted to the Bar Association. 1835 He then worked as a lawyer in Dover. He married John Clayton's niece Margaret Douglass; the couple had three children.

Public offices

Comegys was first elected as a Whig member for a two-year term in the Delaware House of Representatives in 1843 . In 1849 two more years followed in this parliamentary chamber. In 1852 he was on a commission to review the Delaware Constitution.

On November 19, 1856, he succeeded the late John Clayton in the US Senate. However, he only acted as a temporary solution, did not run again and left Congress on January 14, 1857, when Martin W. Bates was elected as a successor for Clayton's remaining term of office until 1859.

Many years of independent legal work followed until he was elected Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court in 1876. He took up this position on May 18, 1876 and remained there until his resignation for health reasons on January 26, 1893; he was succeeded by Alfred P. Robinson . Joseph Comegys died just days later in his hometown of Dover.
