Ted Kaufman (2009)

Edward E. "Ted" Kaufman (born March 15, 1939 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He represented the state of Delaware between January 16, 2009 and November 15, 2010 as the appointed successor to Joe Biden in the US Senate .

Ted Kaufman studied mechanical engineering at Duke University and graduated in 1960 with a bachelor's degree . In 1966 he earned a Masters of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania . From 1973 he was on the staff of the recently elected US Senator Joe Biden, for whom he worked until 1994; from 1975 he was its chief of staff. In 1991 he was also a lecturer at Duke University's law school.

After working for a short time in a private law firm as a political advisor, Kaufman was appointed in 1995 by US President Bill Clinton to the Broadcasting Board of Governors , an agency responsible for government broadcasters. He resigned from his post there on November 25, 2008 after he had been nominated the day before by Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner to succeed Joe Biden, who was elected US Vice President . The governor said, “I believe Ted Kaufman meets every condition that this office requires. His political views are similar to Senator Biden's. He has stated that he will only focus on working for the people and not run for re-election. ”Kaufman took his oath of office on January 16, 2009, the day after Joe Biden stepped down from office.

The official by-election took place on November 2, 2010. Long-time favorite Republican Congressman Michael Castle had surprisingly lost his party's primary to Christine O'Donnell , an activist of the Tea Party movement , who lost to Joe Biden in the 2008 Senate election . She was then clearly defeated in the actual election by the Democratic candidate Chris Coons , a local politician from New Castle County . After his victory, Coons was sworn in as Kaufman's successor on November 15, 2010.
