Martin W. Bates
Martin Waltham Bates (born February 24, 1786 in Salisbury , Litchfield County , Connecticut , † January 1, 1869 in Dover , Delaware ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Delaware in the US Senate .
After finishing school in Connecticut, Martin Bates moved to Delaware, where he worked as a teacher before studying medicine and law . He became a member of the Bar Association in 1822 and practiced in Dover from then on. At this time he was also active in politics for the first time and was a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware in 1826 .
In the following time he limited himself to his legal work. It was not until 1852 that he resumed public office as a delegate to the Delaware Constitutional Convention. After the death of US Senator John M. Clayton on November 9, 1856, Bates was then elected his successor in Congress ; Joseph P. Comegys had temporarily taken the place. Martin Bates moved into the Senate on January 14, 1857 and remained there until March 3, 1859. He ran for re-election, but was defeated by Willard Saulsbury , which ended his political career.
