Michael Newbold "Mike" Castle (born July 2, 1939 in Wilmington , Delaware ) is an American lawyer and politician . He is a member of the Republican Party and was considered a leader of the more liberal wing during his active career.

Castle attended Tower Hill School in Wilmington and graduated from there in 1957. In 1961 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Hamilton College in Clinton ( New York ), and in 1964 an LL.B. at the Law School of Georgetown University in Washington . He then worked as a private attorney before he held his first public office as Deputy Attorney General of Delaware between 1965 and 1966 .

From 1967 to 1977 Castle was then a member of the State Parliament of Delaware ( Delaware General Assembly ), first from 1967 to 1973 as an elected member of the House of Representatives , then from 1973 to 1977 as a member of the Senate , which he subsequently became Vice-Governor of 1981 to 1985 presided over the Senate.

Castle was governor of the state for two terms from 1985 to 1992 , but resigned at the end of 1992 to run for the United States House of Representatives . He prevailed with 56 percent of the vote against the Democrat Janet C. Rzewnicki and moved into Congress on January 3, 1993 , where he took the only seat in Delaware; subsequently he was always re-elected with a clear majority. Castle was a committee member of the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee .

In the run-up to the 2010 Senate election , Castle announced his candidacy for the seat of non-re-running Democrat Ted Kaufman . He has long been considered a favorite for the Republican nomination as well as the actual election victory against the Democratic candidate Chris Coons . In the last few weeks before his party's primary , however, he lost ground to the much more conservative Christine O'Donnell, who was supported by the Tea Party movement , and was ultimately defeated by 47:53 percent of the vote, which was his first defeat in a candidacy meant for political office. Former Democratic lieutenant governor of Delaware, John C. Carney , and for the Republicans the businessman Glen Urquhart ran for his seat . Carney won the election and followed Castle on January 3, 2011. Coons won the Senate election against O'Donnell.
