James D. McGinnis

James D. McGinnis (born January 11, 1932 in Chicago , Illinois , †  February 24, 2009 in Dover , Delaware ) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1981 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Delaware.

Career

After his father's death in 1945, James McGinnis moved to Baltimore , Maryland with his mother . In 1951 he married Mary Jane Richards there. Three years later the couple moved to Dover, Delaware. He became a successful businessman. First he worked in the industrial sector and then in the real estate sector. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1962 and 1964 and again from 1972 to 1976 he was a member of the Delaware House of Representatives . He was also a member of the State Senate from 1964 to 1966 .

In 1976 McGinnis was elected lieutenant governor of Delaware alongside Pierre S. du Pont . He held this office between 1977 and 1981. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1980 he decided not to be re-elected. Instead, he ran in the first primaries for gubernatorial election. However, he quickly got out of this election campaign in favor of another, then unsuccessful, Democratic candidate. In 1997, James McGinnis was appointed to the Delaware Real Estate Commission . He died in Dover on February 24, 2009.
