Matthew P. "Matt" Denn (born February 9, 1966 in Wilmington , Delaware ) is an American politician . From 2015 to 2019 he was Attorney General of Delaware; he had previously served as lieutenant governor of that state since 2009 .

Career

Matthew Denn studied at the University of California at Berkeley . After completing a law degree at Yale University and being admitted to the bar in 1991, he began to work in this profession. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He served as legal advisor to Governor Ruth Ann Minner in 2001 and 2003 . Between 2005 and 2009, he was the Delaware State Insurance Commissioner.

In 2008 Denn was elected Lieutenant Governor of Delaware alongside Jack Markell . After being re-elected in 2012, he held this office from January 20, 2009 to January 6, 2015. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . A focus of his work as Lieutenant Governor was the concerns of children. In November 2014, he applied to succeed the no longer candidate Attorney General of Delaware, Beau Biden , and prevailed over Republican candidate Ted Kittila. The post of lieutenant governor subsequently became vacant. Only after the election in 2016 was a new incumbent elected, Bethany Hall-Long .

From 2015 to 2019 he was Attorney General of Delaware; he is succeeded by Kathy Jennings .
