Shien Biau Woo

Shien Biau Woo ( Chinese  吳 仙 標 , Pinyin Wú Xiānbiāo , * 1937 in Shanghai , China ) is an American politician . Between 1985 and 1989 he was Lieutenant Governor of the State of Delaware .

Career

Shien Biau Woo grew up in his Chinese homeland. During the communist seizure of power in 1949, he and his parents came to the United States via Hong Kong . He studied physics and mathematics at Georgetown College in Kentucky . He earned a doctorate in physics from Washington University in St. Louis . In 1966 he received a chair in physics and astronomy at the University of Delaware . He held this position until he retired in 2002.

Politically, Woo first became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1984 he was elected lieutenant governor of Delaware. He held this office between 1985 and 1989. He was Deputy Republican Governor Michael Castle and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1988 he ran for the US Senate , but was defeated by Republican William V. Roth . Four years later he failed with a candidacy for the US House of Representatives against ex-Governor Castle. He has been politically independent since 2000.

Today, Woo is one of the leading figures in the Sino-American community in the United States. He is also involved in various other Asian-American groups. He is also a curator for the University of Delaware. He has been married to his wife Katy since 1963, with whom he has two grown-up children.
