Eugene Bookhammer

Eugene Bookhammer (born June 14, 1918 in Lewes , Delaware ; †  February 23, 2013 there ) was an American politician . Between 1969 and 1977 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Delaware.

Career

Eugene Bookhammer was born on their farm in Sussex County , the last of ten children to William and Winifred Bookhammer . In 1936 he graduated from Lewes High School . Then he ran a sawmill. During World War II , he served in the United States Army . He was used in Europe. For his military achievements he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star . After the war he continued his work in his sawmill business.

Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He was a delegate or substitute delegate to three Republican National Conventions . In 1962 he entered the Delaware Senate . In 1968 Bookhammer was elected lieutenant governor of Delaware alongside Russell W. Peterson . He held this office between 1969 and 1977. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. Since 1973 he served under the new Governor Sherman W. Tribbitt .

Eugene Brookhammer was a member of numerous organizations and associations. In 2009 he co-wrote a book with co-author Richard Carter called Gene Bookhammer and His World . Since 1942 he was married to Mary Catherine (Kitty) Williams. He died on February 23, 2013 in Lewes at the age of 94.
