Philip L. Cannon

Philip Leonidas Cannon (born June 28, 1850 in Delaware , †  June 20, 1929 in Bridgeville , Delaware) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1905 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Delaware.

Career

Philip Cannon was the son of William Cannon (1809-1865), who was governor of Delaware from 1863 until his death . He attended Dickinson College in Carlisle ( Pennsylvania ). However, he left this school without a degree. He worked in agriculture with his brother Henry for some time. At times the brothers also ran a canning factory. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In 1900, Cannon was elected the first lieutenant governor of Delaware alongside John Hunn . He held this office between January 15, 1901 and January 17, 1905. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . The office of vice governor was only introduced during a constitutional reform in 1897. After the end of his time as lieutenant governor, Cannon was no longer politically active. He died on June 20, 1929 in Bridgeville, where he was also buried.
