Alexis I. du Pont Bayard

Alexis Irénée du Pont "Lex" Bayard (born February 11, 1918 in Wilmington , Delaware ; †  September 3, 1985 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1953 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Delaware.

Career

Alexis Bayard came from two well-known families in Delaware on her father's and mother's side. The Bayards had been in American state and federal politics for five generations; the du Ponts were wealthy entrepreneurs in the chemical and gunpowder industries. His father was US Senator Thomas F. Bayard (1868–1942). After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1948 he was a substitute delegate to the Democratic National Convention , on which President Harry S. Truman was nominated for re-election.

In 1948, Bayard was elected Lieutenant Governor of Delaware alongside Elbert N. Carvel . He held this office between 1949 and 1953. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1952 he ran for the US Senate, but was defeated by Republican John J. Williams . He was also a member of several legal associations. After the end of his time as lieutenant governor, he practiced again as a lawyer. Alexis Bayard died on September 3, 1985 in Wilmington.
