Samuel Paynter (born August 24, 1768 in Lewes , Delaware Colony , † October 2, 1845 ibid) was an American politician and governor of the state of Delaware from 1824 to 1827 .

Early years and political advancement

Samuel Paynter began his professional career in his parents' general store. The family made significant fortunes which enabled Samuel to become director of the Farmer's Bank . He held this office for 25 years. Politically, he was a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1796 and 1824 he was intermittently both a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware and a member of the State Senate . In between, he was Tax Commissioner in Sussex County in 1805 . In 1817 he was Secretary of the Treasury of Delaware and Trustee of the Loan Office . He was a judge between 1818 and 1820. On October 7, 1823, he was elected governor of his state; The opposing candidate was David Hazzard , who would later also hold the office.

Delaware Governor

Samuel Paynter took up his new office on January 20, 1824. During his three-year tenure, construction began on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal . The governor reassigned some government committees. At that time, a new school was opened in Newark . Otherwise, his tenure was relatively quiet. However, the party landscape in the United States slowly began to change. His Federalist Party subsequently fell sharply in Delaware, one of its last strongholds. Paynter was the penultimate governor of that party. The Democratic-Republican Party also showed signs of disintegration. Once divided, it would produce both the Democrats and the Whigs over the next few years .

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure on January 16, 1827, Samuel Paynter remained politically active. From 1844 until his death he was again a member of the House of Representatives of his state. Otherwise he devoted himself to his private interests. He died in October 1845. He had six children with his wife, Elizabeth Rowland.
