The Environmental Foundation Michael Otto is an internationally promoting and operational foundation under civil law based in Hamburg . The entrepreneur Michael Otto founded the foundation in 1993 under the name Michael Otto Foundation for Environmental Protection with the purpose of promoting nature and environmental protection, in particular promoting the protection of seas , bodies of water , wetlands and drinking water resources . The foundation promotes innovative and future-oriented project ideas and brings together representatives from politics, business, science, administration and nature conservation with regard to current environmental issues. She works in the fields of funding, education and dialogue. The foundation took on its current name in April 2018.

advancement

The foundation's current funding focus is on the protection and preservation of rivers and the sustainable use of river landscapes in Germany and Eastern Europe. The foundation supports selected innovative nature conservation projects with the aim of treading new exemplary paths in a sustainable manner. It supports major projects of recognized nature conservation organizations as well as projects of the foundation's own children and youth support program "aqua-projekte".

For example, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland is being supported in the renaturation of 90 kilometers of the Lower Havel river in order to improve the living conditions for flora and fauna on the Havel, which has been ecologically strongly changed by shipping and agriculture. In addition, young people between the ages of 8 and 21 can implement their own projects to protect water as a resource as part of the “aqua-projects”. The creation of a biotope, the adoption of a brook sponsorship or the implementation of other project ideas are possible.

education

In order to create awareness of nature and its conservation, the foundation is committed to active environmental protection through further student projects, the exemplary establishment of endowed professorships and the support of research and education centers.

Central to this is the AQUA AGENTS educational program initiated by the foundation and implemented in cooperation with various partners. In the course of their training to become aqua agents, elementary school children learn in a playful but systematic way the importance of water as a resource for people, nature and the economy. The foundation enables the children to reflect on their own actions in cooperation with partners and to develop a sense of social responsibility.

dialog

The initiation and moderation of dialogues by the foundation pursue the goal of bringing about constructive solutions for people and nature with regard to current environmental issues together with decision-makers from politics, business, science, administration and nature conservation.

Since 2004 the foundation has been organizing the “Hamburg Talks for Nature Conservation” in order to initiate social debates on important environmental issues and to create awareness of nature conservation issues. The annual series of symposiums is intended to set standards and create motivation for exemplary initiatives in order to preserve the environment for future generations.
