Olaf Tschimpke (2014)

Olaf Tschimpke (born December 2, 1955 in Peine ) is a geographer and was President of Germany's largest nature conservation association, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) , from June 2003 to November 2019 .

Life

Tschimpke studied geography and did research on environmental problems and questions of environmentally friendly land use in Sri Lanka and Tanzania . In 1976 he joined NABU (then still the German Association for Bird Protection, DBV). Olaf Tschimpke is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nature Conservation History Foundation and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Michael Otto Environmental Foundation , the Board of Trustees of the Hanns R. Neumann Foundation, the Supervisory Board of the Wuppertal Institute , the ZDF TV Council and the Council for Sustainable Development .

He is married and has three children.

job

In 1985 Tschimpke became managing director and 2000 chairman of the NABU regional association Lower Saxony. After the resignation of Jochen Flasbarth , who had moved to the Federal Environment Agency , Tschimpke was elected as the new NABU President at an extraordinary federal representative meeting of NABU in June 2003. He prevailed over his fellow competitors Christoph Heinrich and Manfred Niekisch in two ballots . Tschimpke was re-elected in 2007, 2011 and 2015. His term of office ended on November 9, 2019 and he did not run again for the scheduled election of the president.

Positions

In his inaugural address, Tschimpke pleaded for NABU's regional nature conservation work to be expanded and professionalized on site. Further concerns are the expansion of the international work of the NABU and the stronger involvement of the nature conservation youth (NAJU) in the strategic decision-making processes of the NABU. Like his predecessor Jochen Flasbarth, he sees NABU as an environmental and nature conservation association that does lobbying for nature conservation issues. Another focus is internal association development.

At his inauguration, he said: "NABU and nature conservation must become virtually identical terms for citizens."

At the end of his term of office, he accuses politicians of always protecting their own clientele when it comes to climate protection and only taking care of individual sub-areas, such as the electricity market, but not also including the heating market at the same time. Furthermore, they have omitted the transport sector and the Agriculture not redesigned to be environmentally friendly. Instead, he calls for a technological revolution, especially in energy-intensive industries. An intact nature is also indispensable, "otherwise we won't be able to slow down climate change".
