Robert J. Reynolds

Robert John Reynolds (born March 17, 1838 in Smyrna , Delaware ; † June 10, 1909 in Kent County , Delaware) was an American politician and governor of the state of Delaware from 1891 to 1895 .

Early years and political advancement

Little is known about Robert Reynolds' school days. In 1861 he settled on an estate called "Golden Ridge" near Petersburg . There he worked as a farmer and in horticulture. Politically, Reynolds became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1869 and 1871 he was a member of the Delaware House of Representatives for one term . Between 1879 and 1881 he was his state's finance minister. On November 4, 1890, he was elected as the new governor of his party with 51% of the vote against the future US Senator Harry Alden Richardson .

Delaware Governor

Robert Reynolds began his four-year term on January 20, 1891. During this time, the state constitution was reformed and the border with the neighboring state of Pennsylvania was re-measured. In the field of education, free school books were made available to students for the first time.

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, Reynolds withdrew from politics. He returned to his agricultural interests and died on June 10, 1909. He was married twice and had a son.
