At the time of the United States Census 2000, Smyrna was inhabited by 5,679 people. The population density was 595.8 people per km ². There were 2242 housing units at an average 235.2 per km ². The population of Smyrna was 72.88% White , 22.42% Black or African American , 0.51% Native American , 0.56% Asian , 0.07% Pacific Islander , 1.44% said other races belong to and 2.11% named two or more races. 3.42% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Smyrna were distributed to 2,114 households out of which 36.7% had children under 18 years of age. 45.9% of households were married, 18.4% had a female head of household without a husband, and 30.8% were not families. 24.9% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 10.4% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.02.
