Stephen Russell Mallory Jr. (born November 2, 1848 in Columbia , South Carolina , † December 23, 1907 in Pensacola , Florida ) was an American politician who represented the state of Florida in both chambers of Congress .

Life

Mallory was founded in 1834 in Columbia, the son of the politician Stephen Russell Mallory Sr. born. During the Civil War , he joined the Confederate Army . After the war he graduated from Georgetown College in Washington, DC in 1869 and then worked as a teacher in Latin and Greek until 1871. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in Louisiana in 1872 . He practiced in New Orleans for a while , but then moved to Pensacola, Florida in 1874.

Mallory was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in Florida in 1876 . He entered the state Senate in 1880, and was re-elected four years later. He then represented the Democratic Party in the United States House of Representatives , to which he belonged from March 4, 1891 to March 3, 1895. Not re-elected for the 1894 election, he ran for the next Senate election and entered the United States Senate on May 15, 1897 for the Democrats . Six years later he was confirmed for a second term, which was terminated prematurely by his death in 1907. He was succeeded by William James Bryan .
