Abijah Gilbert

Abijah Gilbert (born June 18, 1806 in Gilbertsville , Otsego County , New York , † November 23, 1881 ibid) was an American politician who represented the state of Florida in the United States Senate.

Abijah Gilbert first attended Gilbertsville Academy , a private school in his hometown, before enrolling at Hamilton College in Clinton . He graduated there in 1822. Until 1850 he worked as a merchant in New York City ; in 1865 he finally moved to St. Augustine in northeast Florida.

As a follower of abolitionism , Gilbert supported the Whigs in his younger years ; later he joined the Republican Party . For the Republicans, he was elected to the Washington Senate during the Reconstruction period . He stayed there from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1875 and was the last Republican to hold the Class 1 Senate seat until 1989 .

After leaving the Senate, Abijah Gilbert also retired from professional life. He died in his native Gilbertsville in 1881.
