Jérémie (Haiti)
Jérémie ( Creole : Jeremi ) is an arrondissement and the capital of the Grand'Anse department in southwest Haiti .
Jérémie is located on the edge of the country in the extreme southwest of Haiti and is one of the Haitian cities on the Gulf of Gonâve . The population census in 2003 identified around 31,000 residents. The Grande-Anse , one of the most important rivers in Haiti, flows into the Caribbean Sea at Jérémie over the Gulf of Gonâve .
Jérémie has been the scene of historical events several times. Among the Jérémie Vespers , 27 people were killed in massacres by the Force de Défense Haïtienne and the Tontons Macoutes in late summer and autumn 1964 , after 13 members of Jeune Haiti tried to overthrow the dictator François Duvalier's (“Papa Doc”) regime in early August 1964 .
A number of well-known artists and historians were born in Jérémie, including Etzer Vilaire and Emile Roumer . The place has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Jérémie since 1972 .
