Josaphat-Robert Large (born November 15, 1942 in Jérémie , Haiti , † October 28, 2017 in New York City ) was a poet and novelist .

biography

Josaphat-Robert Large is a poet , writer, and art critic . His father , Camille Large, was a professor of literature and his mother , Odette Chassagne, a store owner. He studied at the Collège Saint-Martial , the Collège Saint-Louis and the Gymnasium Nord-Alexis in his hometown. The work of Rimbaud influenced his first writings. He published his first collection of poetry , Nerfs du vent , in 1975 and his novel , Les terres entourées de larmes , the first volume of the Les empreintes de la vie (The Traces of Life) trilogy , received the Caribbean Literature Prize in 2003 Josaphat-Robert Large writes in French , English and Haitian Creole . He is a member of La Société des Gens de lettres de France , the Écrivains de langue française and the Pen Club .

exile

The author was arrested for participating in a student strike against the dictator François Duvalier . After a short time in prison, he finally went into exile and settled in the United States in 1963 . In New York , he studied English at Columbia University and photography at the New York Institute of Photography . He founded the theater group Kouidor with Hervé Denis, Syto Cavé and Jacques Charlier. In addition to his work in literature, he worked with some opponents of the Duvalier regime and participated in two invasions. He was arrested twice by the US Coast Guard .
