Charles W. Jones

Charles William Jones (born December 24, 1834 in Balbriggan , Ireland , † October 11, 1897 in Dearborn , Michigan ) was an American politician of Irish descent from the Democratic Party . From 1875 to 1887 he sat for the US state Florida in the US Senate .

Early life and family

Jones was born in Balbriggan in eastern Ireland. His father died during his childhood. He emigrated with his mother to the United States at the age of ten. He attended schools in New York City and St. Louis , Missouri . In 1854 he moved to Florida, before he lived in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi . In 1857 he was admitted to the bar after studying law . He opened his own law firm in Pensacola .

Jones had been married to Mary Ada Quigley since 1861. Both were parents to four children until her death in 1880.

Career

In 1872 he got into political business. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives . In 1874 he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives by a margin of five votes . In the same year Jones ran for a seat in the US Senate. He was elected senator by the electorate of Florida and was reelected in 1880. In the spring of 1885, Jones moved to Detroit . In the period that followed, several unsuccessful attempts were made to remove him from his office because he is said to have had a relationship with a much younger woman. In the Senate election in 1886, he was no longer elected to the Senate.

After resigning from the Senate, Jones lived in miserable circumstances in Michigan as part of the Traveling People . In the last years of his life he had a permanent residence in Dearborn. There he died completely impoverished in 1897. He was buried in Pensacola.
