Trinity Episcopal Church is a historic church in Mobile , Alabama , United States and the first major Gothic Revival building to be constructed in Alabama. The building was designed by the architects Frank Wills and Henry Dudley .
history
The Trinity Episcopal Church parish was founded in 1845. It was the second parish of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America in Mobile; the first was the Christ Church Cathedral . The cornerstone of the building was set on April 8, 1853. A yellow fever epidemic struck the city earlier that year, and church records show that in September 1853 the parish priest held 49 funeral services. Obviously this slowed down construction, but in 1857 the structure was completed. It was on the corner of St. Anthony and Jackson Streets until it was moved to Dauphin Street in 1945.
Hurricane Frederic damaged the structure in 1979. Part of the roof was covered, windows were broken and the steeple was damaged. This was later reinforced with a steel structure and the roof was repaired.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 20, 1990 and was nominated for recognition as a National Historic Landmark , but was not given this status because of the 1945 relocation of the structure.
The church building was renovated in 2010. On Christmas Day 2012, the church was damaged by a tornado that reached level EF2 on the extended Fujita Scale and made its way through the city. The chancel of the building lost a third of its roof and the front gable of the parish hall collapsed. The storm also caused further substantial damage to the building complex.
architecture
The Trinity Episcopal Church was built in the neo-Gothic style, inspired by the Perpendicular Style of the English late Gothic . It is made of bricks and its floor plan consists of a nave , choir and a towering bell tower . The construction inspired the parish priest of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Huntsville to commission the architect Frank Wills of the church in Mobile to design the church for his congregation. The design of the two churches is pretty similar.
