The Principality of Bels (also Principality of Belz , Ukrainian Бе́лзьке князі́вство / Bels´ke knjasivstvo ; Polish Księstwo bełskie ) was a Ruthenian principality in the west of today's Ukraine and in eastern Poland . It existed from 1170 to 1462. It was named after the city of Bels .
history
Independent principality (1170–1233)
The principality was established in 1170 when, after the death of the Grand Duke of Kiev and Prince of Volhynia Mstislav II, his sons divided the Principality of Vladimir-Volhynia among themselves. The independent principalities of Bels , Tscherwen and Brest were created . After the brother's death, Cherven was given to Bels .
The principality of Bels existed as an independent domain until 1233.
Dependency under other rulers (1233–1462)
From 1233 it belonged to the Principality of Halitsch-Volhynien .
In 1340 the Belz rule came to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania for the first time . In 1366 it became part and fiefdom of the Kingdom of Poland for the first time as the Principality of Chełm-Bełz . From 1370 it was again part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania before it came under the jurisdiction of the Hungarian-Polish King Ludwig “the Great” from 1377-1387 . It then belonged again as a fiefdom and vassal principality to the Kingdom of Poland and in 1388 was given to the line of the Mazovian Piasts as a vassal rule .
In 1462 the Principality of Belz was withdrawn as a settled fiefdom by the Polish crown. The Polish Bełz Voivodeship was established on the territory of the former principality .
