Juri (Georg) II.

Juri II. (Latin Georgius Dei gratia Rex Russiae , Ukrainian Юрій ІІ , German Georg II. , Polish Jerzy II. ), Until 1323 Bolesław of Mazovia (also Bolesław Georg II. , Ukrainian Юрій-Болеслав II Тройденовиłч , Polish II Bolesław Jerzyoles II Trojdenowicz , Latin Boleslaus II Trojden de Masovia natus dux et dominus Russiae ; * 1308 ; † April 7, 1340 in Wolodymyr ) was from 1323 Prince of Halych-Wolodymyr . He came from the Mazovian line of the Piast dynasty . He was a great-great-grandson of Konrad I , Duke of Mazovia.

Life

Bolesław was born as the son of Duke Trojden I of Mazovia and Maria von Halytsch-Volodymyr , daughter of Juri I of Galicia , under the name Bolesław. In 1323 the ruling dynasty of Halych-Volodymyr died out in the male line . The nephew of the last ruler, Bolesław of Mazovia, succeeded him. He was related to both the Polish and the Lithuanian ruling family. However, when Bolesław was poisoned by his boyars in 1340 for allegedly preferring Catholics , a struggle broke out between the emerging Eastern European powers Poland and Lithuania over the inheritance of the principality of Halych-Volodymyr, which eventually ended in a division of the empire. The territory of the Principality of Halych (Galicia) went to the Kingdom of Poland, that of the Principality of Volodymyr (Volhynia) to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
