Josephine Mary Brandell (born November 26, 1891 in Bucharest , Romania , † August 1977 in New York City , USA ) was an English musical artist and actress .

Life

Beginnings

Born in Romania in 1891 as the daughter of Philipp Brandell, Josephine emigrated with her family to America in 1900 and settled in New York. Josephine dreamed of becoming an actress at an early age. On February 15, 1907, at the age of 15, she married Bernard Black Brandeis, also from Romania. The marriage was short-lived, the couple divorced in September 1910 and Josephine reverted to her maiden name. After the divorce, Josephine devoted herself to her acting training.

Career

Josephine Brandell had her first small role in the comedy Night Birds by Johann Strauss . Fritzi Scheff played the leading role , but the newspapers only wrote about the young new discovery. In 1914, Josephine Brandell played her first leading role in Come Over Here , which was performed at the London Opera House. After that, her career went uphill, she had engagements in England and on Broadway . One of her favorite ships was the Lusitania , one of the most exclusive and fastest luxury liners of the time.

Josephine's trauma

After Josephine Brandell had played on Broadway in the spring of 1915, she took the Lusitania on May 1 to return to London . She was accompanied by the wife of a friend, Mabel Crichton. The actress knew of the existing danger of being torpedoed by a submarine in British territorial waters , which worried her. On May 7, 1915, was Lusitania by a German submarine torpedoed . Josephine Brandell should never fully recover from this tragedy. For the rest of her life, she suffered from the memories, sequelae, and nightmares.

Private life

After the Lusitania drama, Josephine Brandell failed to continue her promising career as successfully as she had started. She had trouble concentrating and could no longer empathize with other characters. Therefore, she only appeared sporadically in small roles and slowly and dull goodbye to acting.

On May 19, 1920, she married John Ormiston Lawson-Johnston. However, the marriage was not happy and ended in divorce. On June 1, 1929 she entered into a third marriage with the military Captain George John Seymour Repton, which went harmoniously and happily. During the Second World War , Brandell founded the organization "The American Friends of Britain" to promote understanding between the two nations. In the middle of the war, on May 10, 1943, George Repton died unexpectedly.

On December 7, 1945 Josephine Brandell Brandeis Lawson-Johnston Repton married her fourth husband, Beresford Cecil Bingham, the 8th Earl of Annesley and 9th Viscount of Glerawly, which earned her the title "Countess of Annesley". After his death on June 29, 1957, Josephine returned to New York, where she led an unspectacular life and died in August 1977 at the age of 85. Despite four marriages, she has no offspring.
