Stepan (Ukrainian and Russian Степань ; Polish Stepań ) is an urban-type settlement in the western Ukrainian Rivne Oblast with about 4,000 inhabitants. It is located on the Horyn River , about 39 kilometers southwest of the Rajons capital Sarny and 57 kilometers north of the Oblast capital Rivne .
The settlement council also includes the villages of Hruschiwka (Грушівка), Dwirez (Двірець), Kalyniwka (Калинівка), Melnyzja (Мельниця) and Trudy (Труди).
history
The place was founded in 1290 and was part of the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania in the Volyn Voivodeship until 1795 . Then it came to the newly founded Volhynia Governorate as part of the Russian Empire . After the end of the First World War, the place became a part of the Second Polish Republic ( Voivodeship Volhynia , Powiat Kostopol (from 1925) / Powiat Równe (until 1925), Gmina Stepań), after the outbreak of the Second World War the area became part of the Soviet Union and Occupied by Germany from 1941 , in 1945 it finally became part of the Soviet Union and was incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR . Since 1960 the place has had the status of an urban-type settlement, in 1991 the settlement was part of the newly formed Ukraine.
