Klewan ( Ukrainian and Russian Клевань ; Polish Klewań ) is an urban-type settlement on the Stubaska River ( Стубазка ) in Rivne Oblast in northwestern Ukraine with about 7500 inhabitants.
history
The settlement probably originated in the 12th century and grew mainly in the 15th century around a castle belonging to the Polish dynasty of Czartoryski . Until the third division of the Kingdom of Poland in 1795, Klewan belonged to the Polish Voivodeship Volhynia . After that, the settlement became part of the newly created Volhynia Governorate of the Russian Empire .
After the regaining of Polish independence and the end of the Polish-Soviet War , Klewan came to the Republic of Poland in 1921 and was located here in the Volyn Voivodeship , Powiat Równe , Gmina Klewań . After the outbreak of the Second World War , the settlement was incorporated into the Soviet Union in the course of the occupation of eastern Poland by the Red Army . Its administrative classification also dates from this period. During the Second World War, Klewan was occupied by the Wehrmacht between 1941 and 1944 . After the end of the war, the settlement came back to the Soviet Union and since 1991 to the independent Ukraine .
On August 8, 2017, the settlement became the center of the newly established Klewan settlement community ( Клеванська селищна громада Klewanska selyschtschna hromada ). This also includes the urban-type Orschiw settlement . Until then, the settlement formed the settlement council of the same name.
