Samuel Orgelbrand (* 1810 in Warsaw , † November 16, 1868 in Warsaw) was a Polish publisher , bookseller and printer owner.

Life

Samuel Orgelbrand attended the State Rabbinical Seminary ( Rządowa Szkoła Rabinów ) in his hometown from 1826 to 1830 , but decided against a career as a rabbi. As a 19-year-old, he had already successfully published some translations of French novels popular at the time; the world of books fascinated him. After completing the seminar, he began to work as a printer and a publisher. In 1836 he opened a second-hand bookshop in Warsaw, and soon afterwards a bookstore. A bookbinding shop and a type foundry were added, as well as their own foundry, not least because Orgelbrand was not satisfied with the quality of the letters that had been delivered to him.

His greatest achievement was the first major encyclopedia in Polish , the Encyklopedia Powszechna ( Universal Encyclopedia ) , which appeared in 28 volumes from 1859 to 1868 . His aim was to create a work in Polish that was comparable to the large encyclopedias in German, English and French. Orgelbrand himself was not only the publisher, but also the editor who put the editorial staff together. Therefore, his encyclopedia was also known as the "Orgelbrands Enzyklopädie" ( S. Orgelbranda Encyklopedja powszechna ) and appeared in later editions under this title. His name had become a trademark.

In addition to Polish books, Orgelbrand also published books in Hebrew and Yiddish , including a 20-volume edition of the Babylonian Talmud that was published from 1860 to 1864 . It was a great success; Organ band sold 12,000 copies. The profit enabled him to keep up the large-scale project of the Encyklopedia Powszechna .

Samuel Orgelbrand is buried in the Jewish cemetery on ul. Okopowa in Warsaw. His tombstone recalls some of his life's achievements: “Bookseller, publisher of the first Polish encyclopedia, member of the board of the Warsaw synagogue parishes”.

His publishing house and printing house were continued after his death by his sons Hipolit (1843-1920) and Mieczysław (1847-1903) as Towarzystwa Akcyjnego odlewni czcionek i drukarni S. Orgelbranda synów .
