Simon B. Conover

Simon Barclay Conover (born September 23, 1840 in Middlesex County , New Jersey , †  April 19, 1908 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Florida in the US Senate .

After attending private school in Trenton , Simon Conover studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from the University of Nashville Medical School in 1864 . During the Civil War he served on the medical staff of the Union Army . After the war, he continued to serve as a surgeon for the Army and was transferred to Lake City . After Florida was re-admitted to the Union, he said goodbye to the military.

In 1868 Conover took part as a delegate to the Florida Constitutional Convention; in the same year he was appointed Treasurer of the state. He also became a member of the Republican National Committee , where he remained until 1872. In 1873 he moved into the Florida House of Representatives , where he acted as speaker .

His term in the state parliament was short-lived, however, because on March 4, 1873 Conover took up the post of US senator in Washington . During the following six years he was, among other things, chairman of the Committee on Enrolled Bills . After leaving Congress in March 1879, he returned to work as a doctor, but also remained politically active. So he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Florida in 1880 ; In 1885 he was again a delegate to the constitutional convention.

In 1889, Conover resigned as a United States Surgeon based in Port Townsend . In addition, he was from 1891 on the governing body of the Agricultural College of Washington State .
