Daniel Robert Graham (born November 9, 1936 in Coral Gables , Florida ) is an American politician and was the 38th governor of Florida from 1979 to 1987 . Between 1987 and 2005 he was a senator in the US Congress .

Early years and political advancement

Daniel "Bob" Graham attended public schools in Dade County . In 1959 he graduated from the University of Florida before studying law at Harvard University . After passing his exam in 1962, he was admitted to the Florida bar. His political career began in 1966 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives . Between 1970 and 1978 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1978 he was able to assert himself within his Democratic Party and win the nomination for the top candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial elections. Then he also won the actual election. Four years later he was confirmed in office by Florida's voters.

Florida governor

Graham's eight-year tenure began on January 2, 1979. During his tenure, Graham was committed to protecting the environment. There were programs to protect rivers, coasts, and the Everglades . However, he also had to deal with a wave of refugees from Cuba during the Mariel boat crisis , which brought over 100,000 Cuban exiles to Florida in 1980 and caused economic and labor problems there, especially in Miami . To date, he is a member of the Florida Bar Association.

US Senator

In 1986, Graham was elected to the US Senate . In order to take up his mandate in Washington, DC in time on January 3, 1987, he had to resign that day, three days before the end of his term as governor. After a few re-elections, he remained in the US Congress until 2005. From 2001 to 2003 he headed the Senate Intelligence Committee . In 2003, Graham ran within his party for the presidential nomination for the upcoming 2004 election. Further life

After his tenure in the US Senate, Graham was a visiting professor at Harvard University from 2005 to 2006 . Today he is working on establishing a political school at the University of Florida. Graham sits on several boards of directors of major Florida companies. He is married to Adele Khoury and has four children.
